In Nizami's Haft Paykar the king spends seven nights in seven domes, each a colour. Wednesday is the Blue Dome. Its field is graded sapphire, pale at the crown and deep at the base, and on it a princess sits beneath her pavilion with a cypress at her side, in smooth gold relief. A white diamond border, a polished gold dome. The first of the seven.
