Oval Engagement Rings

The brilliant, drawn long.

An oval diamond is cut in the brilliant style and drawn out along its length, so it keeps much of a round stone’s sparkle in a longer outline. It runs along the finger rather than across it, and it lengthens the look of the hand.

What to look for is mostly a matter for the eye rather than the paperwork: an outline, long and slender or soft and nearly round, that suits the hand it is for, and a bow-tie, the darker band many ovals show across the middle, faint enough to pass unnoticed.

Here an oval is drawn in the house’s own language rather than set as a plain solitaire. On Nahid it sits within pointed iwan arches that show in the ring’s profile; on Kohestar an oval sapphire is framed by the shamseh, the eight-pointed star of Persian tilework; on Panah it sits down into a collar of gold, with a star-set diamond on each shoulder.

How a commission works

Every ring here is made to order, and every one can be customised. A commission begins with a free design session with the designer, at the studio in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter or by video call, wherever you are.

The chosen design becomes a precise digital model, built around the exact stone you approve. Nothing is cut, cast or set until you have approved the digital model.

From design approval, four to six weeks is the honest working range for most commissions, delivery included. A stone you already own is welcome, whether it was bought or inherited, and across every ring the centre stone is your decision: natural or laboratory grown.

Frequently asked

Does an oval look bigger than a round diamond of the same weight?

Often, yes. A stone that runs longer than it is wide covers more of the finger face-up than a round stone of exactly the same carat weight, so an oval can look the more substantial of the two. How much depends on the particular stone, which is why it is worth comparing stones rather than figures.

What is the bow-tie in an oval diamond?

A darker band across the middle of the stone, shaped a little like a bow tie, which many ovals show to some degree. It comes from the way the facets meet the light, and it changes from one stone to the next. It is not one of the grades on a report, so it is judged by looking at the stone itself.

What ratio should an oval be?

There is no correct figure. The ratio is simply the stone’s length against its width: a higher one reads long and slender, a lower one softer and closer to round. The right ratio is the one that suits the hand it is for.

Can an oval engagement ring have a coloured centre stone?

Yes. An oval suits a coloured stone as well as a diamond, and the rings on this page include oval emerald, sapphire and tanzanite centre stones alongside diamonds.

Can I change the metal or the stone on one of these rings?

Yes. Start from any ring here and alter the metal, the stone or the proportions, or start from nothing at all and have a ring designed around your own brief. Both routes are the same commission.
