The band is the perch. The tuti sits at the crown with wings folded in smooth unbroken volumes, a flush diamond line along the wing seam and an emerald cabochon eye. There is no cage anywhere on the piece. There never was one. In the Masnavi, a merchant's parrot learns from a wild bird how to be free: die to the cage, and the door was never locked.
