The Story

In Attar's Conference of the Birds the hoopoe, hodhod, is the guide: the bird the others follow on the road to the Simorgh. Here it stands in strict profile inside a pearl roundel of claw-set diamonds, crest raised, two ribbons lifting from the collar at its neck. Its feet grip the ring and its tail crosses over the diamonds and out of the circle, because a guide does not stay inside the frame. No stones on the bird: satin gold, its feathers in soft relief. Each roundel hangs from a plain polished stud so it swings as you turn your head, and the two birds face one another. Sixteen millimetres across.
