We drew the Hodhod Roundel the way a Sassanian silversmith drew a bird: in strict profile, crest raised, ribbons lifting from its neck, and gave it the frame those craftsmen gave their kings, a ring of pearls, here a line of forty claw-set diamonds. The bird carries no stones: satin gold, its feathers in soft relief. Its beak touches the frame and its feet rest on the ring at its base, but its tail crosses in front of the diamonds and breaks the circle, because a guide does not stay inside the frame. Turn it over and the bird's back is a flat panel pierced with eight-pointed khatam stars, a private geometry against the skin. Twenty-three millimetres across. It hangs from its own cast eye on a fine 18ct yellow gold trace chain, 45 cm long.
