The Story
I designed the Parvaneh Pendant around the oldest love story in Persian poetry: the moth and the flame, parvaneh o sham'. Attar told it, Rumi told it, Hafez told it. The moth circles the candle until it gives itself to the light entirely. In Persian, one word covers both butterfly and moth, and this piece lives happily in that ambiguity. The wings are two continuous volumes of mirror-polished 18ct yellow gold, thin as a wing's edge should be, fuller where they meet the body. Through each upper wing runs a flat ribbon of pave-set diamonds, inlaid flush into the surface so the stones sit level with the gold, a river of caught light rather than decoration resting on top. At the thorax, a richly coloured ruby cabochon sits flush in a smooth bezel: the flame, carried on the body. The satin-brushed body holds the piece's quiet against all that polish. Turn it over and a pierced girih lattice follows the wing silhouette, the house signature, hidden against the skin. Made to order in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter.
