I designed the Sama Pendant around the instant a dancer's skirt catches the turn, the swirl before it settles back to stillness. Sama is named for the Sufi whirling ceremony, the turn that traces back to Rumi's lineage, and I wanted a piece that held that suspended motion rather than the whole spin. The dancer becomes one continuous ribbon of solid 18ct yellow gold: a featureless oval head narrowing into an unbroken sweep of body, then flaring into the skirt. The flare carries a fine row of pave-set diamonds, around twenty-four stones at 1.0mm each, roughly 0.12ct in total, tracing the polished edge of a raw, hand-brushed band like a thread of light caught mid-turn. Mirror polish runs the length of the figure; only that single brushed band interrupts it, so the eye reads movement rather than surface. The back is open and hollowed, which keeps a piece this size, 15 x 20mm, light against the chest, with a discreet D-bail hidden behind the head so the chain reads as a clean line into the figure. It hangs on a fine 45cm 18ct yellow gold cable chain, sized to sit just below the collarbone, worn alone or layered under a coat collar without catching.
